Not uncommon for raccoons to be out during the day as they are nursing mothers that need to feed during the day so they can protect their babies in the evening from night predators.
If orphaned and healthy, we try to reunite with mother if possible. Contact Debbie Jolly Melton for advice (843-607-2521)

FYI: Always best to attempt to reunite (uninjured) babies with mom if possible. They can be placed in a shallow box or basket in shade near tree/nest and wait until dusk. Must be brought in after dark as mother will not return in the evening. Reuniting may not be an option if cats or in the yard. Please keep dogs out of area so mom will feel safe to return.

Leave a message and Debby will return your call.
Please do not touch, relocate, or feed the deer. It is normal for the mother to hide the baby alone in a safe place during the day and the mother will return around dusk. Wait for Debby’s call before taking any action.

Moms leave the nest during day so not all babies are “abandoned”. Moms will return at dusk to feed. Nests are shallow holes in ground and usually have Mom’s soft fur in them. Nests can be hard to find.
